The Birla Institute of Technology & Science

The Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani, is an all-India Institute for higher education. The institute’s history can be traced back to a small school started in Pilani in the early 20th century by noted industrialist G.D. Birla. The school evolved into a set of colleges for higher education, and in 1964 all the colleges were clubbed together under a university of international standing. This university was named the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.  Subsequently, the university opened campuses in Dubai, Goa and Hyderabad.

Over the years, BITS has strived to provide high quality technical education to students from all over India. Its graduates hold responsible positions in the areas of engineering, science and management worldwide.

BITS is dedicated to provide its students  an education that combines rigorous academic study with pervasive industry engagement and the excitement of discovery with the support and intellectual stimulation of a diverse campus community.

BITS admits students on the basis of merit. It conducts an online entrance exam – BITSAT-which is designed to test applicants’ aptitude for physics, chemistry and mathematics. It also has a section on English and logical reasoning. Applicants need to score a minimum of aggregate 75 per cent to be approved for admission.

In Jan 2013, BITS Pilani, along with its global alumni association, launched BITS Connect 2.0. It’s a cross-campus, multi-million dollar technology initiative which links the campuses at Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa. It brings together the entire pool of faculties, industry partners, students and alumni on a common interface, widening the scope of learning, networking and research. It is valued at $5 million and is powered by CISCO Technologies.

BITS Pilani’s Dubai campus was set up in 2000. It is touted as one of the finest engineering institutes in Dubai International Academic City (DIAC). It has 1,500 students from over 20 countries. The campus has, so far, conferred degrees on some 2,350 students. The graduates have been hired by about 600 major corporate houses like Microsoft, Dell, TCS, Infosys and Wipro among others.

BITS Pilani’s K.K. Birla Goa Campus was opened to the students in the year 2004. It is spread across an area of 180 acres in the lap of Verdant Hills. Hosting about 2,600 students, 137 staff members and 160 faculty members, the campus offers doctoral programmes in various disciplines including management & humanities, along with programmes in engineering.
