SSN Engineering College (SSNEC) is one of the leading private engineering colleges in India. Founded by Dr Shiv Nadar, one of India’s most popular ITpreneurs and the chairperson of HCL Technologies, the college launched its inaugural programme in 1996. SSNEC, since its inception, has consistently been featured as one of the premier engineering institutes in the state of Tamil Nadu and among the best private engineering colleges in the country. It is managed by the SSN Trust and is affiliated to Anna University.

The institute boasts of the finest campus infrastructure, one of the best faculty of eminent professors, scientists and industry practitioners and a great learning environment focussed on integrated student development.

SSNEC currently operates from its 250-acre campus in Kelambakkam, about 40 km from central Chennai. It houses various schools and departments of technology among which the School of Advanced Software Engineering is the most prominent. It was started in 2001 in association with Carnegie Mellon University and offers Carnegie’s Master of Science degree in Information Technology with specialisation in Software Engineering. Students, after completing the one-year residential programme in SSNEC campus, visit Carnegie Mellon University for six months of advanced training and project work.

In addition to traditional engineering departments, a Department of English is also operational offering compulsory language courses as per Anna University guidelines. It plays a vital role in developing the language skills of the students, who come from different regional backgrounds. One of the highlights of the department is ‘The SSN Creative Writing Contest,’ with prizes in fiction and poetry categories, an innovative means to promote writing skills.

Admission to SSNEC is strictly based on merit. Students applying in different undergraduate programmes need to appear in an entrance test and individual interview. A final composite score consisting of high school exam percentage, entrance and interview scores is published, listing down students eligible for admission.

SSNEC, since its inception, has provided its students with abundant opportunities to flourish beyond the classrooms. Different extra-curricular events are conducted all through the year by different student bodies or academic clubs with an objective to increase interaction among students from different technology institutes across the country. The Department of Mechanical Engineering conducts CrankX, an annual symposium aimed at nurturing research and technical development among mechanical engineering students. The Chemical Engineering department conducts a national technical symposium, Chemiczna, while Orbitce is a national symposium conducted by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

The SSNEC campus boasts of world-class facilities. With a 1000-seater central auditorium, multiple smaller seminar halls and mini-auditoriums, it provides the perfect backdrop for seminars and corporate interactions that SSNEC has built its reputation around. The central library with 46,000 titles and an online journal database, with link to IEL, ACM, EBSCO, facilitate research.
