Indomie is a brand of instant noodles by Indofood, the largest instant noodle manufacturer in Indonesia with a 72 per cent market share. “Indo” stands for “Indonesia” and “Mie” stands for “noodles” in Bahasa Indonesia. Therefore, “Indomie” stands for “noodles from Indonesia” or Indonesian noodle. It is sold in Australia, Asia, Africa, New Zealand, the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Outside its main manufacturing plants in Indonesia, Indomie is also produced in Nigeria since 1995 where it is a popular brand and has the largest instant noodle manufacturing plant in Africa.

Founded in 1982 by Sudono Salim, a Chinese Indonesian tycoon who also owned Bogasari flour mills, Indofood is one of Indonesia’s largest pre-packaged food companies. Indomie instant noodle brand was first launched in 1982 with Indomie Kuah Rasa Kaldu Ayam (Chicken stock) flavour, followed by Indomie Kuah Rasa Kari Ayam (Chicken curry) flavour. In 1983, Indomie launched its first dry (served without soup) Indomie Mi Goreng variant, which quickly became popular in the Indonesian market.

Indomie noodles come in a variety of flavours. Currently, there are around 38 flavours of Indomie instant noodle variants available in the market. The production of a few other variants has been discontinued due to their less popularity and sale. Indomie brand is divided into seven product categories – Indomie goreng (fried noodle served without soup), Indomie kuah (with soup), Indomie Jumbo (large), Selera Nusantara, Kuliner Indonesia (Indonesian cuisine), Mi Keriting (premium curly noodle) and “Taste of Asia”.

The most popular flavour is Indomie Mi goreng, followed by Indomie Soto Mie (Noodle Soto flavour), Indomie Ayam Bawang (Onion Chicken), Indomie Kari Ayam (Chicken Curry), Indomie Kaldu Ayam (Chicken stock) and Indomie Ayam Spesial (Special Chicken). Indomie is made from high quality flour supplied by Bogasari flour mills, with spices and seasonings, produced accortding to international standards and enforced with vitamins A, B1, B6, B12, niacin, folic acid, mineral and iron. Indomie is certified as halal by Majelis Ulama Indonesia, certified ISO 9001:2001 and HACCP from SGS.

Indomie has won several awards. Some of the awards include Indonesia Best Brand Award (IBBA), The Most Effective Ad, Indonesia Consumer Satisfaction Award (ICSA) and Indonesia Best Packaging Award.

In 2005, Indomie was named in the Guinness Book of World Records for producing “The Largest Packet of Instant Noodles”, creating a packet that was 3.4m x 2.355m x 0.47m, with a net weight of 664.938 kg, which is about 8,000 times the weight of a regular pack of instant noodles. It was made using the same ingredients as a regular pack of instant noodle and was certified fit for human consumption. Indomie has become a household name for instant noodle in Indonesia.
