Gardens by the Bay is a park spanning a massive 101 hectares of reclaimed land in central Singapore, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir. The park consists of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. The largest of the three gardens, Bay South Garden stands at 54 hectares. Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of a strategy by the Singapore government to transform Singapore from a ‘Garden City’ to a ‘City in a Garden’. The stated aim is to raise the quality of life by enhancing the greenery and flora in the city.
Developed by Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter, the gardens capture the concept perfectly and help in strengthening the idea of a City in a Garden further. Construction started in 2006 and it became fully operational in June, 2012. The gardens received outstanding response from people of the world with more than one million visitors within the first two months and five million in the first year. This iconic landscape is fast turning into the garden of the world.
Supertrees grab the attention of every visitor and they provide shelter to plants, organisms and the vegetation around. Green technology was used to develop the Supertrees, the conservatories, springs, rainforests and theme gardens like Heritage Gardens and Outdoor Gardens. These are some of the many environment supportive structures that facilitate growth of nature in Singapore – the City in a Garden.
