The Gulf Medical University (GMU) in Ajman, United Arab Emirates, is an integral and unique component of the healthcare system of the country. The university is composed of the College of Medicine, College of Allied Health Sciences, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy and College of Graduate Studies. GMU is a tertiary institution whose basic functions include medical education, research, patient care, and community service involving multiple areas at the national and regional levels.
The university is promoted by the Thumbay Group, under the able stewardship of Mr. Thumbay Moideen, the founder president, Board of Governors of the university. GMU has been recognized for providing programmes that had been introduced in the Gulf for the first time and is one of the few universities in the world which follows an Integrated Curriculum (system based teaching) in medicine. Students from over 70 countries study at the university, and faculty and staff from over 22 countries working in the institution. The institution has launched a unique feature for the students way back in 2001, which is known as Summer Training Programme. Students are sent to recognized institutions and hospitals world over for a special 3 week training programme during the summer vacation.
The Gulf Medical University offers educational programmes through its Colleges of Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmacy and College of Graduate Studies. The campus is comprised of academic units operating alongside Center for Advanced Biomedical Research & Innovation (CABRI) to pursue excellence in biomedical research that shall have an impact on the education and the outcome of clinical care and Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH)- a multidisciplinary educational facility that provides high-tech simulated and virtually created hospital set-up for clinical and communication skills teaching and training for all health care professionals.
GMU is a major institution assuming leadership in the discovery of new knowledge and the development of programmes in research, medical education, and patient care, under the academic leadership of the University, headed by the Provost, Prof. Gita Ashok Raj and her team. Graduates of GMU are placed in reputable institutions in many countries. Some of them are working and others are pursuing their post-graduation and residency programmes in USA, Europe, and other countries.
Striving for global recognition, GMU has been included in the updated World Directory of Medical schools (WDMS) by the World Health Organization (WHO) and also being recognized by The Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education & Research (FAIMER).
