Lakshmanan Subas Chandra Bose, Renom: Energising the renewable energy market
Selected as India’s Most Trusted CEO 2020, Lakshmanan Subas Chandra Bose, Renom is inspiring the renewable clean energy marketplace.
Years of working in the industry, your contribution reflects versatility and volubility. What has influenced your decision making process at various stages?
26 years of work experience in the renewable energy sector across all facets of the industry right from Service, Projects, Design, Engineering & even tried my hands on entrepreneurship for a couple of years . Also had the opportunity to have worn different caps of a Customer, contractor, Investor , Assessor & entrepreneur at different stages has made me understand the dynamics of the business in a holistic manner.
I am not cluttered by what others think or say in a decision making process . I take a decision after having a thorough 360 analysis of the potential outcome of that decision being made . I believe that I am making my decision true to my inner conscience and that if I believe that the decision being taken would stand for the good health of the organisation , I take it & back it. I certainly think before taking a decision and not think after taking it!
A accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career?
My short tenure at Archean heading the design and development of the 2MW wind turbine from concept to prototype has been really special to me. I cherish that experience a lot !! The second one being when I got on board with the Sanjay Ghodawat Group at a point where the concept of ISP was not heard of in India . We had a lot of belief that this could be an icebreaker in the Indian wind industry space then and today as i am nearing completion of 5 years in the group , RENOM is the country’s leading and fastest growing ISP with more than 1GW size under our O&M contracts. As a CEO , This is really satisfying.
How do you integrate corporate philanthropy or corporate social responsibility as a part of your business strategies?
The CSR initiatives from all the companies of our group are routed centrally through the Sanjay Ghodawat foundation . We as a group firmly believe in giving back to the society what has been earned from it . I am very proud as an individual to have chosen a career in the renewable energy industry and contribute indirectly to the society at large by going eco-friendly and reducing the carbon footprint. It’s our way of a giving back to the society .
What has been your driving force or philosophy in life?
Do something rather than doing nothing !
You either lead or follow if you can or get out of the way for someone else ! don’t be a stumbling block!!
What are the other philanthropic works you are involved in?
Personally doing a bit of charity and I too have taken up renovation of a small temple near my village as a caretaker. On the professional front we have been assisting villagers around our various wind farm sites with eatables, rations and other essentials during the ongoing COVID crisis. We are involved in plantation of tree saplings across all our sites and are educating the village children on being responsible to the environment.
How do you define success and how do you measure up to your own definition?
Success is not just leaving behind something tangible like name, fame, property, wealth….success is leaving behind legacy for the next generation to follow and be proud of what you have left behind for them
We are constantly making things better, faster, smarter or less expensive. In other words, we strive to do more with less. Tell us about a recent project or solution to a problem that you have made better, faster, smarter or less expensive?
By the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning platforms , we have implemented Digital Twin at RENOM wherein we create a virtual replica of the physical turbine where you can almost see what’s happening to the turbine in real time . This has led to reduced downtimes, more availability, lower inventory and optimise operating cost.
In your opinion what is the most significant aspect of leadership?
Leadership is always a pull process and not a push process ! so lead from the front!!!
Give the success to your team when you succeed and take the failures on you when you fail and be accountable.
Your perception of an empowered society. How far your industry has / can contribute for the same?
Being in the power sector , Only when uninterrupted power supply is made available to all the villages in the country, society really becomes empowered. We still have a long way to go but we are in the right path to make power available and viable to the common man.
PERSONAL GRID
One thing you wish to change and one thing you wish to retain about your industry?
I expect the industry to come together as one family . Now its compartmentalized like OEMs, IPPS & ISP’s . It should be one united Renewable industry seeking govt for discreet structural reforms and policies with a win-win situation to all .
An another important change to this value chain could be possible standardization of product design based on turbine capacity. There are so many variants that it makes the supply chain more complex and uncompetitive. It should be a kind of one size fits all like the automotive or IT sector.
One thing you have to let go off as an entrepreneur/leader?
Ego & Bureaucratic style of leadership (Bossism)
Whom do you owe your success to?
Family , my mentors and colleagues
Best thing about your job?
Everyday is a new challenge, work is not monotonous.
I still have the same passion when I started my career as a 20 yr old!
A message from you to all the future entrepreneurs/leaders?
Have passion and perseverance in what you do . Don’t give up , you will be successful !
