The Oberoi Group’s foundation dates back to 1934 when Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi, the founder chairman of the group, bought two distinctive properties from the Britishers – The Clarke’s in Delhi and The Clarke’s in Shimla. In the following years, the Oberoi Group continued the expansion in India as well as abroad. Growing up from the humble beginnings, in 1943 Mohan Singh Oberoi became the first Indian to own what was the country’s largest upmarket hotel chain, Associated Hotels of India, along with properties throughout the former British India, including the Cecil, which the Oberoi group still owns.
