Providing space to about 1,200 shops, the Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping mall based on its total area. With more than 630 retailers, the mall was opened in November 2008. The entire complex comprises about 22 cinema screens, a luxury hotel with 250 rooms and more than 120 cafes and restaurants. Its three-level parking space can accommodate over 14,000 vehicles. It is home to the world’s largest acrylic panel aquarium which weighs a massive 245 tonnes. The Dubai Mall is home to Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo with thousands of aquatic animals. The Dubai Mall is the world’s most visited shopping and leisure destination. It recorded a footfall of more than 65 million people in 2012. Other major attractions include the Ice Rink – a perfect place to hone one’s ice-skating skills; KidZania – a mini-city that is made for and run by children; and SEGA Republic – a 76,000 square feet indoor theme park where people can enjoy over 150 games including SEGA’s iconic ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’. Emaar is currently expanding the mall, adding a further one million sq. ft to Fashion Avenue. The new extension will feature modern retail, signature leisure, luxury serviced apartments and a range of hospitality choices.
